Bridge is the product of the third Café Writers Norfolk Commission. The Commission is a new annual poetry competition open to recent graduates from a creative writing based course at Norwich School of Art and Design and the University of East Anglia.
Patrons of the Commission, Kate and Dominic Christian are passionate about Norfolk and wanted to support emerging literary talent, and build a body of poetry which responds to the county in some way. They will generously donate £3,500 annually, for the lifetime of the Commission, which provides prize money for the winner and funds the making of collections such as this.
The judges of the 2009 Café Writers Norfolk Commission were patron Kate Christian, Caroline Gilfillan, former Chair of Poetry-next-the-Sea, and Chris Gribble, Executive Director of Writers’ Centre Norwich.

Bridge links Norwich to its Serbian twin city Novi Sad with ladybirds, bulldozers, moth-balled fur coats and surgically prepared fish dinners. The river is red with dye, with rust, with the leaked blood of two cities and somewhere in the depths of the water, a woman’s words are vanished.
Laura Elliot’s debut collection is as rich in imagery as it is in language. This is exciting visceral poetry from a poet not afraid to take risks.
